Atul Gawande has an impressive resume. A prominent surgeon with a second career in public service, Gawande was both a Rhodes Scholar and the recipient of a MacArthur “Genius Grant.” When a genius like Dr. Gawande identifies one of the most overlooked tools in the field of medicine, people pay attention. Checklists. 

According to one study, the use of checklists for medical procedures have reduced mortality by 23% and cut complications by 40%. Another study found that for checklists to be effective, they need to be written down; checklists you keep in your head have no impact on results.  Checklists have played a crucial role in everything from medicine to the military to aviation. As Dr. Gawande observed, “A checklist cannot fly a plane. Instead, they provide reminders of only the most important steps – the ones that even the highly skilled professional using them could miss.”
